How to Write Numbers and Rupee Amounts in Tamil Words (with Examples)

By PraxTools · Published 29 October 2026 · Updated 29 October 2026 · 3 min read

Many people in Tamil Nadu need to write an amount in Tamil, whether for a letter, an agreement, a receipt or a school or office form. Tamil number words change shape depending on what follows them, which makes them harder to get right than a simple list suggests. This guide explains the main building blocks, shows examples generated by the PraxTools Number to Words converter and gives tips for checking your result.

The Indian system in Tamil

Tamil amounts follow the same grouping as the Indian system used in English. After thousands, the next units are lakh and crore:

FigureNameTamil word
1,000One thousandஆயிரம்
1,00,000One lakhலட்சம்
1,00,00,000One croreகோடி

So 12,50,000 is read as twelve lakh fifty thousand, just as in English, with the Tamil words in place of the English ones.

Why number words change shape

In Tamil, a number word often takes a different form when another number follows it. You can see this in the examples below, which were produced by the converter:

  • 100 alone is நூறு, but 125 uses நூற்று before the next number.
  • 200 is இருநூறு, and 900 is தொள்ளாயிரம், which are single fixed words.
  • 1,000 alone is ஆயிரம், but in 25,400 it appears as ஆயிரத்து before the next number.

This joining behaviour is the main reason that amounts written by simply putting words side by side look wrong to a Tamil reader.

Examples from the converter

In these examples ரூபாய் means rupees, பைசா means paise, மற்றும் means and, and மட்டும் means only.

How to use the converter

  1. Open the Number to Words converter.
  2. Type the amount, such as 25400.75. Commas in valid Indian or international grouping are accepted.
  3. Choose Tamil as the language.
  4. Copy the result, or use the speak button to hear it if your device has a Tamil voice installed.

The converter handles non-negative amounts with up to 15 whole-number digits and two decimal places.

Checking the result

  • Read the words aloud and compare each group (crore, lakh, thousand, hundred) with your figures.
  • Check that rupees and paise are separated correctly and that the closing word is present.
  • For legal, financial or official documents, ask a Tamil reader to review very large or unusual amounts. Automatic conversion is a helpful draft, not a substitute for checking.
  • Find out whether the office, bank or authority accepts amounts in Tamil, since some forms require English.

Writing the same amount in English

For documents that need English as well, the same converter writes amounts such as ₹12,50,000 as Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousand Rupees only. You can read more about cheque style in our guide to writing the amount in words on a cheque.

Frequently asked questions

Does the converter support Tamil?

Yes. Choose Tamil from the language menu to get rupee amounts in Tamil words.

Why does நூறு change to நூற்று?

Tamil number words take a joining form when another number follows, so 100 alone and 125 use different forms.

Can I write paise in Tamil?

Yes. The converter writes paise as பைசா after the rupees, joined with மற்றும்.

Is the Tamil output always correct?

It is designed to follow Tamil number rules, but you should still check important documents with a Tamil reader.
