How to Merge, Split, Reorder and Rotate PDF Pages (Phone and Computer)
Most PDF jobs fall into a few simple patterns: join several files into one, take a few pages out of a long document, put pages in the right order, fix a sideways scan, or add page numbers. You do not need installed software for any of them. This guide shows how to do each with free browser tools, in a sensible order, and explains the small details that cause confusion, such as how page ranges are read.
Merge several PDFs into one
Open Merge PDF, add your files and arrange them in the order you want. On a computer you can drag files up or down, and on a phone you use the up and down buttons. The top file becomes the first pages. Press Merge and the file downloads with your first file’s name plus “-merged”. Pages are copied rather than turned into images, so text stays sharp and each page keeps its size and orientation.
Take pages out of a long document
Use Split PDF to create a new PDF from the pages you choose, or to save every page as its own PDF in a ZIP file. Type page numbers and ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, or use the quick buttons for All, Odd, Even and halves. In Split PDF the new file always keeps the original page order and shows each page once. If you want the pages in your own order, or a page repeated, use Extract PDF Pages, which follows the order you type.
Delete pages you do not need
With Delete PDF Pages, tap the pages you want to remove in the preview, or type their numbers, and download the rest. At least one page must remain. Deleting removes whole pages only. It is not a way to hide information inside a page you keep.
Reorder pages
Reorder PDF Pages builds a new file from the sequence you type, so list every page that should be kept. For example, 3,1,2 puts page 3 first. To reverse a six-page file, type the pages one by one as 6,5,4,3,2,1, because a range written backwards such as 6-1 is read as 1-6. Check the page count shown in the tool first so you do not leave a page out.
Fix sideways or upside-down pages
Scans and phone photos often come out turned. In Rotate PDF you can tap the rotate buttons under single pages or choose a rotation for a whole range. Use one method at a time: if you tap the buttons under any preview, the tool uses those choices and ignores the Pages and Rotation fields.
Add page numbers
Add Page Numbers prints a number on every page in the position, size and colour you choose, using a format such as Page {n} of {total}. Numbering always starts at 1 on the first page. If you need a cover page without a number, number the main part first and then merge the cover in front of it.
A sensible order for a job application pack
- Delete or extract the pages you need from each document.
- Rotate any sideways scans.
- Merge the files in the order the application asks for.
- Reorder if something ended up in the wrong place.
- Add page numbers if the document is long.
- Compress the final file with Compress PDF if the upload has a size limit, as explained in our guide to reducing PDF size for online forms. Compress last, because compressing turns pages into images and removes selectable text.
Privacy and good habits
The PDF page tools run in your browser, so your files are not uploaded to a PraxTools server for these operations. The pages load their PDF libraries from the internet, so you need a connection to open them. Keep your original files until you have opened the result and checked every page, and avoid processing highly sensitive documents on shared or public computers.
